Core Lawn Aeration

What is lawn aeration?

Lawn aeration is the process of puncturing the soil with small holes that allow vital elements like air and water to enter the grass roots. This process helps the roots grow deeply, which can help product a strong and healthier lawn.

What equipment is used?

We use a stand on hydraulic aerator. With our state-of-the-art hydraulic aerator, we are able to control the depth of the core plugs to match your lawns needs. This is beneficial if your lawn is clay, rocky, or dry due to lack of rain.

Should I aerate my lawn?

The short answer, YES!
Lawn aeration helps alleviate soil compaction while also breaking up excess thatch. Lawn thatch is the layer of living and dead grass tissue that lays on the base of the grass. Lawn aeration is suggested to be done yearly or every other year at the least.

When is the best time to aerate?

At Wernert Lawn Care, we start our aeration season after Labor Day and go through Thanksgiving. This is when the cooler fall temperatures along with rain usually return. This helps ensure that the lawn does not suffer from drying out after aeration. We also suggest that after aeration you provide at least 0.5” of water on the lawn within the first 5 days. This will allow water to get down into the grass root system.

Did you recently build your home or have construction done?

After any type of construction, we suggest aeration!
Most of the time during construction the topsoil is either stripped or is layered beneath the clay. Aeration will help mix in that top layer of topsoil.
We suggest waiting at least 2 months after your new grass or sod has been laid before you aerate. This allows the grass time to become deeply rooted and keep your new lawn in place.

Wanting to overseed your lawn?

Post aeration is the best time to overseed your lawn. Aeration gives the soil better ability to receive and accept nutrients. Overseeding allows new grass to germinate and help a not-so-healthy lawn turn into a plush lawn for your family to enjoy.

We offer overseeding services as well and will make sure to use the same grass seed type that is already established in your lawn.
